The 2024 Australian Antarctic Research Conference will bring together Australia’s polar research community for our first national meeting in many years.

It will be held at the University of Tasmania in nipaluna/Hobart from Tuesday 19 to Friday 22 November 2024. An Early Career Researcher (ECR) day will precede the conference on Monday 18 November.

Abstracts are invited for short oral presentations, posters, posters and lightning talks, as well as proposals for side events (up to three hours in duration).

Contributions are invited from all relevant disciplines, including (but not limited to) glaciology, oceanography, atmospheric science, biology, geophysics, biogeochemistry, human impacts, humanities, law, arts and social sciences, as well as new technologies and their application, under the following themes: 

  • Antarctica in a changing climate and Earth system
  • Antarctic extremes and beyond
  • Antarctica’s past
  • Human dimension of Antarctica
  • Antarctica’s future: Research directions in the global context
  • Regime shifts and tipping points in the Antarctic system
  • Other Antarctic/Southern Ocean/sub-Antarctic topics

The multi-disciplinary conference is sponsored by the Australian Antarctic Program Partnership, the Australian Centre for Excellence in Antarctic Science, Securing Antarctica’s Environmental Future and the Australian Antarctic Division.

  • Abstract submissions open: 10 June 2024

  • Presenters notified of outcome: 2 September 2024
